I’m glad that you are doing research on the candidates. So many of our freedoms depend on us doing the groundwork before we cast our vote! The issues that you are asking about would not come under Canyon County Commissioner decisions; however, in order for you to learn a little more about me let’s go through your list!
Homeschooling-Parents not only have the right but the responsibility to assure their children are equipped with the knowledge to take them into the future. Only a parent can know what is best for their family. That might be homeschooling, private Christian schools, or any of the numerous choices available today. No one way is right for all.
I will refer back to the parent's rights and obligations. Do the research and find the path forward that fits your family's needs.
Shelter in Place
We have educated our city, Greenleaf, to shelter in place for emergencies. When trouble comes, either in the form of extreme weather or a pandemic, a prepared household has options available to them that an unprepared one does not.
Red flag laws
"Take the guns first, go through due process second” has never been the American way. Red flag laws turn our legal tradition upside down. “Guilty until proven innocent” from “innocent until proven guilty” is fundamentally and unacceptably un-American.
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution says: ...."the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." STATE CONSTITUTIONAL PROVISION - Article 1, Section 11. “The people have the right to keep and bear arms, which right shall not be abridged;”
I am a gun owner and, as the Mayor of Greenleaf, have worked to pass a gun law stating that all households with guns should be educated on the use, safety, and storage of those guns. We have held gun safety courses and posted signs at our city limits stating, “This is not a gun-free zone.”
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” I believe this says we all have the freedom to believe what we want. I believe in Jesus as my savior. I strive to follow the example of Jesus. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The Bible is a book close to my heart, full of scriptures for inspiration, insight, and guidance.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd-trimester abortion
I believe all life is sacred, the life of the unborn child as well as the life of the pregnant woman wanting to terminate the life of her unborn child. In protecting the right to life of the unborn child I do not want to shame or ridicule those who have made the decision to have an abortion. Which of us has a life without regrets? I am against abortion at all stages and in saying so realize that I have an obligation to love my neighbor as myself.
